Welcome back to the Meltdown series, this being number 13.  It is presented in honor of our upcoming ZenDaze Halloween party which we decided (under the influence of much tequila) would be a rave.  I have saved everyone the embarrassment (mine) that was Side 1 and am only posting Side 2.  The happy, piano-driven breakbeats was a short-lived moment in the Midwest rave scene, but it sure does bring back some of those more ecstatic memories.  Enjoy!

Here we have yet another installation of the Meltdown series, number 16 to be exact.  This mix features some darker UK breakbeat (hence Rufige Cru), and is the last of my breakbeat mixes.  It’s pretty rough, just flipped on the tape recorder and started playing records (and don’t even ask me about a playlist…).  It was never circulated widely, but I’m inspired to share this because Jimpster played our Love Tempo party here in Tokyo and this mix actually has one of his early moniker Flag tracks (we chuckled about it).  So buckle up, and get ready for a voyage into the darkside.

Back in 1993, before the world knew of the Detroit Electronic Music Festival and Movement, there was World Party; a mega-event at the Joe Lewis arena in downtown Detroit in which we the Atmospheric Audio Chair collective were most lucky and honored to participate.  It featured possibly the best Detroit line-up one could ever hope and pray for: Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Carl Craig, Richie Hawtin, Inner City live, D Wynn… and was to be a showcase event and official party for the World Cup soccer tournament.  Unfortunately it was not well organized, well equipped or well attended.  But whatever energy World Party lacked, the very local after-party certainly made up for it (to this day I laud and praise D Wynn for his masterful work at that loft).  And this entire experience, beginning to end, was then resuscitated and resurrected, becoming this very mix I present before you.

For your listening pleasure, as side 1 begins with the haunting blips and bleeps of Model 500, just imagine standing in the arena lobby at the ‘ambient stage’ (two tables in front of some vinyl covered booths), right next to the soda and popcorn dispensers, with Richie Hawtin hanging out on one side, Mike Huckaby on the other, and you will be instantly transported to the original Detroit Electronic Music Festival.  Enjoy!

Delving once again into the Meltdown series, this breakbeat gem adventures heavily into the dub and reggae influenced tracks which eventually evolved into ‘jungle’.  This was when you could clearly hear the differentiation from the house/techno inspired breakbeats.  Ah, the memories…back when raves were fun.  Enjoy this little time capsule of UK rydims.

Okay boys and girls.  We begin our descent once again into the early 90′s, adventuring into the sounds that fueled the land of rave out here in the Midwest.  As I write this I am recalling the many hours of being on the road to get to the remotest warehouses, basements, barns, fields and farms, being so thankful for the mix tape as it has guided so many of us along our journeys in life.  This mix presents some US and continental European music, but its focus is firmly on the new sound of the time – UK “progressive house” (there, I said it).  I sometimes can’t help but cringe when I hear mixes from this era, but alas they do bring back some unforgettable memories.  So may this give you a chuckle or two as you imagine where on earth you were, who you were with, and most importantly what you were wearing back in 1993.  Yes, go there…and enjoy!

This is the mix that started it all.  1991/92 in all it’s glory.  The rave scene was just emerging in Chicago, the music was fresh and new, and the sense of Midwest community was strong.  Here we have everything from Jam ‘n’ Spoon to Future Sound Of London to (my personal favorite) Sven Van Hees.  Only 200 cassettes were produced, but it reached many a raver near and far.  Take a trip back to the early tribal/trance sound in all its remastered glory!
