What can I say about this mix.  It’s out there…  One of my personal favorites.  It belongs to the quadrilogy of mixes which include A La Peanut Budder Sandwiches, Star, and the soon to be posted Golden Age.  All in all, this is a very eclectic collection of electronica with hats off to Detroit/Chicago artists and the many whom they inspired.  One side ends with the ambient ramblings of The Black Dog and Air Liquide (a nod to the 70s psychedelic band Brainticket) and the other with the blurred d&b/downtempo echos of Subsurfing and Attica Blues.  You’ll start on planet Earth and end up on a space trip.  So sit back and enjoy the journey!

For those of us who didn’t have the privilege to experience the original Warehouse, Music Box, The Loft or Paradise Garage, at least we had MEDUSA’S!  So many years, so many memories…  Whenever I hear certain songs I am immediately transported back to that patchouli and clove cigarette filled three-ring-circus-dressed-in-combat-boots all-ages juice bar.  Even with fake ID in pocket (i.e. access to the few clubs that would actually honor one), Medusa’s was our acid-industrial-techno-new wave haven of choice.  And it continues to be an inspiration for me to this day.  So for shits n giggles, here’s a humble little present from me to you (granted not all of these are ‘Medusa’s classics’, but you’ll get the picture…).  HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Here is my airport moving walkway inspired mix ‘Stand Right, Walk Left’.  The designer must have thought he was overseas where they stand ‘left’ and walk ‘right’.  Ooops.  The songs here are left to play out with the focus being less on overlapping blends and more on the spacial and textural elements of each track.  It’s definitely one of the deeper mixes I have done and is part of the era of mixes (Painting, Material Sound, At 7am Hovering, Peaceably So, Gee Your Beats Sound Terrific) that were created up at the mountain yoga retreat where I had been studying/living at the time.  So if you’re having the kind of day where you’re feeling to let the busyness of life pass you on the left (or right…), these 90 minutes are for you.

Okay boys and girls.  We begin our descent once again into the early 90’s, adventuring into the sounds that fueled the land of rave out here in the Midwest (and elsewhere I’m sure).  As I write this I am recalling the many hours of being on the road to get to the remotest warehouses, basements, barns, fields and farms, being so thankful for the mix tape as it has guided so many of us along our long (and sometimes monotonous) journeys in life.  This mix dates back to 1993 and presents some US and continental European music, but its focus is firmly on the new sound of the time – UK “progressive house” (there, I said it).  I sometimes can’t help but cringe when I hear mixes from this era, but alas they do bring back some unforgettable memories.  So may this give you a chuckle or two as you imagine where on earth you were, who you were with, and most importantly what you were wearing back in 1993.  Yes, go there…and enjoy!

In the spirit of our recent Atmospheric Audio Chair show in Chicago, I’m inspired to share more intelligent/ambient electronica of the 90’s.  And since it’s the end of summer (here in the northern hemisphere at least), I feel the mood is apropos.  This mix is part of a quadrilogy which includes the house mix ‘Star’, the electronica mix ‘eve ryd al if e’, and the ambient mix ‘The Golden Age’; all capturing a quality and style that segues nicely into each other.  It was a question at one point whether or not I used any multitrack recording to do this.  Answer: no way Jose!  It was simply two turntables and, yes, a VCR (for the ‘Killing Zoe’ bits).  It’s all the magic of the music (complete with the original Craig Hanke artwork!).  So enjoy the full, original 90 minute version of the Amazing Mumford’s magical incantation, ‘A La Peanut Budder Sandwiches’!

Here is the mid-tempo Sunshower mix with original artwork.  And yes, the title was indeed inspired by Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band.  I believe I did this one in Colette’s basement in Chicago.  This was an exercise in keeping the pace at a casual jaunt, using rich textures, colorful instrumentation, and having a ‘Sunday afternoon in the park’ mood.  It’s one of those projects I felt turned out quite well from start to finish.  So enjoy a little Sunshower one sunny afternoon – bask yourself in its rays, soak it up, drink it in…Enjoy!

The early 90s gave birth to some of the most memorable chill-out music, and we did our best to harness it at the Atmospheric Audio Chair parties.  Our love and passion brought us together in the dead of winter back in 1992 where we and other weekend-worn ravers would huddle together on a Sunday night and savor the sounds that up until now only filled our living rooms and headphones.  A very special treat was having the chill-out guru himself, Mixmaster Morris, as a guest at AAC.   This mix was definitely inspired by that first appearance, which made quite an impression on us all.  So enjoy this 90 minute journey into deep electronic relaxation…

This mix was created the winter of 1995 yet exudes a sunny, disco-inspired temperment.  Many speculated that the title inferred my retirement as a DJ.  Some thought it simply a cheeky reference to the much quoted Simpsons (at least one other mix was so inspired and titled).  Maybe it was a bit of both…  Regardless, the collection of music marks many of these artists’ most sumptuous achievements (who can deny the excellence of this era of the Cajual label, Moodyman, Carl Craig and Rob Mello).

Being here in San Francisco has inspired me to post this live set, recorded at the STOMPY party back in February of 2000.  I believe it was at the Barneveld space which had a nice warehouse feel with a delectable sound system.  These parties have a certain nostalgia for me, as it was my first SF gig in ‘95 back when it was called Stompy Stomp.  This recording is extra special!  Aside from being raw and unedited, I challenge you to figure out why…
