We all love our techno, especially those hidden gems form the early 90s.  And not just the Detroit and Chicago varietals, but especially those vintage blends from the UK (I believe I made this mix just so I could include LFO’s ‘Syndrome’ on it).  Techno was branded as ‘intelligent’ back then, and who can deny that about Carl Craig, Mr. Fingers or The Black Dog?!  But as they say, they just don’t make music like they used to.  Sad but true.  So here for your enjoyment, a 90 min atypical-techno excursion, so aptly titled after what was my thirty-third ‘meltdown’ series endeavor.

Back in 1993, before the Detroit Electronic Music Festival and Movement there was World Party; a mega-event at the Joe Lewis arena in downtown Detroit in which the AAC collective were most lucky to participate.  It featured possibly the most legendary Detroit line-up one could ever hope for: Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Carl Craig, Richie Hawtin, Inner City live, D Wynn…  Unfortunately it was not well organized, well equipped or well attended.  But whatever energy World Party lacked, the after-party certainly made up for it (D Wynn definitely stole the show).  This entire experience, beginning to end, was resuscitated and resurrected, becoming this very mix I present before you.

For your listening pleasure, as side 1 begins with the haunting blips and bleeps of Model 500, just imagine standing in the cavernous lobby at the ‘ambient stage’ (two tables in front of some vinyl covered booths next to the soda and popcorn vendors) with Richie Hawtin on one side, Mike Huckaby on the other, and you will be instantly transported to the original Detroit Electronic Music Festival.  Enjoy!

What can I say about this mix.  It’s out there…  One of my personal favorites.  It belongs to the quadrilogy of mixes which include A La Peanut Budder Sandwiches, Star, and The Golden Age.  All in all, this is a very eclectic collection of electronica with hats off to Detroit/Chicago artists and the many whom they inspired.  One side ends with the ambient ramblings of The Black Dog and Air Liquide (a nod to the 70s psychedelic band Brainticket) and the other with the blurred d&b/downtempo echos of Subsurfing and Attica Blues.  You’ll start on planet Earth and end up on a space trip.  So sit back and enjoy the journey!

Here we have Star from 1995, the third mix tape from a series of four (the other three being Eve ryd ayl if e, The Golden Age, and A La Peanut Budder Sandwiches).  A lot of mixes were either on 60 or 90 minute cassettes before this era, but some of us decided to super-size it and give the boys n girls 100.  And in those extra minutes I’ve squeezed in some favorites (I just noticed that both sides end with Carl Craig and Masters at Work productions!).  So enjoy the extra 10 minutes of star dusted (and remastered) musics.

Here is the mid-tempo Sunshower mix with original artwork.  And yes, the title was indeed inspired by Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band.  I believe I did this one in Colette’s basement in Chicago.  This was an exercise in keeping the pace at a casual jaunt, using rich textures, colorful instrumentation, and having a ‘Sunday afternoon in the park’ mood.  It’s one of those projects I felt turned out quite well from start to finish.  So enjoy a little Sunshower one sunny afternoon – bask yourself in its rays, soak it up, drink it in…Enjoy!

Exuding a sunny disco-inspired temperament, this is a Summertime favorite of mine. It captures the sumptuous mid-90s creations of the likes of Moodyman, Carl Craig, Masters At Work, Theo Parrish, and Rob Mello. Many speculated that the title inferred my retirement as a DJ. Maybe it was simply a cheeky Simpsons reference… Whichever the case, it’s here remastered for everyone to revisit and enjoy.

Here is a mix from 1996 made in honor of our Material party at Shelter.  The original line-up consisted of residents Josh Werner, Scott Song and myself, with promoters Erick Urenn and Colette. I left Chicago in 1995, but the night continued on having a healthy lifespan with many other resident DJs, migrating to various other clubs, remaining a mainstay in Chicago for many years. This mix is an homage to those good times at Shelter which we will always think of fondly… Enjoy!
