Here we have yet another installation of the Meltdown series, number 16 to be exact.  This mix features some darker UK breakbeat (hence Rufige Cru), and is the last of my breakbeat mixes.  It’s pretty rough, just flipped on the tape recorder and started playing records (and don’t even ask me about a playlist…).  It was never circulated widely, but I’m inspired to share this because Jimpster played our Love Tempo party here in Tokyo and this mix actually has one of his early moniker Flag tracks (we chuckled about it).  So buckle up, and get ready for a voyage into the darkside.

Here’s my one and only adventure into the world of drum & bass.  I’m a fan of breakbeat, and at the time this was a well needed diversion from a long stint of house mixes.  Whenever I listen to this, I’m transported back to good old Deep Grooves in St. Louis where I acquired most of these records.  And I have to give that city props for providing me with some of my most unforgettable rave memories.  So from me to you, enjoy Kiku.  HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Delving once again into the Meltdown series, this breakbeat gem adventures heavily into the dub and reggae influenced tracks which eventually evolved into ‘jungle’.  This was when you could clearly hear the differentiation from the house/techno inspired breakbeats.  Ah, the memories…back when raves were fun.  Enjoy this little time capsule of UK rydims.

What can I say about this mix.  It’s out there…  One of my personal favorites.  It belongs to the quadrilogy of mixes which include A La Peanut Budder Sandwiches, Star, and The Golden Age.  All in all, this is a very eclectic collection of electronica with hats off to Detroit/Chicago artists and the many whom they inspired.  One side ends with the ambient ramblings of The Black Dog and Air Liquide (a nod to the 70s psychedelic band Brainticket) and the other with the blurred d&b/downtempo echos of Subsurfing and Attica Blues.  You’ll start on planet Earth and end up on a space trip.  So sit back and enjoy the journey!

For this archive dig, we venture into the sounds that fueled the Midwest raves’ remotest barns, farms and fields back in the early 90s. This mix is all about the new at the time UK progressive house sound. I sometimes can’t help but cringe when I hear mixes from this era, but they do bring back some unforgettable memories. Here is the mid-tempo Sunshower mix with original artwork.  And yes, the title was indeed inspired by Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band.  I believe I did this one in Colette’s basement in Chicago.  This was an exercise in keeping the pace at a casual jaunt, using rich textures, colorful instrumentation, and having a ‘Sunday afternoon in the park’ mood.  It’s one of those projects I felt turned out quite well from start to finish.  So enjoy a little Sunshower one sunny afternoon – bask yourself in its rays, soak it up, drink it in…Enjoy!

Exuding a sunny disco-inspired temperament, this is a Summertime favorite of mine. It captures the sumptuous mid-90s creations of the likes of Moodyman, Carl Craig, Masters At Work, Theo Parrish, and Rob Mello. Many speculated that the title inferred my retirement as a DJ. Maybe it was simply a cheeky Simpsons reference… Whichever the case, it’s here remastered for everyone to revisit and enjoy.

This is the mix that started it all–1991/92 in all its tribal/trance glory. The rave scene was just emerging in Chicago, the sound was fresh and new, and the sense of community was strong all across the Midwest. Only 200 cassettes were produced, but it somehow reached many a raver near and far. I owe much to my time on the West Coast for the music and inspiration on here. This wouldn’t exist without the help of Sasha, Barry Weaver, Mark E Quark, Derrick Carter, Mark Farina and Josh Werner for recommending/supplying many of these musical gems!
